SHORT FICTION (1500 to 6000 words)

(Update: Short Fiction submissions for this round will be closing on May 4th, 2026 at 11:00 PM EST)

In our short fiction category we are looking for original genre-fiction short stories in:

  • Science fiction
  • Fantasy
  • Speculative
  • Thriller/Mystery (with some SF&F aspects preferred but not required)
  • Historical fiction (with some SF&F aspects preferred but not required)

At this time, we are not publishing reprints (stories originally published by another site, self-published, magazine, or anthology) unless by specific request.

Submissions should be made in modern manuscript format and can be opened in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

We pay 11 cents ($CAD) per word up to a maximum of $400 ($CAD).

SHORT COMICS

If you are a comics creator with an idea that’s not quite long enough to be its own book and maybe too long for social media, we want to be the market for that.

We are interested in completed genre comics featuring original characters (creators will retain the rights to ownership of their characters). The publication is currently digital only, so comics that can be formatted for web and included in our fixed epub and pdf ebook are required. Colour is not required for comics submissions.

We pay $70 ($CAD) per page up to a maximum of $400 ($CAD). We do accept reprint submissions for short comics previously posted on social media at a rate of $15 ($CAD) per post.

COMMENTARY & INSIGHTS (500 to 3000 words)

We want your genre-themed hot takes and well-reasoned opinions on storytelling in fandom spaces. For example, our debut piece is a ranking of every story in the Zelda franchise in anticipation of the upcoming live-action movie.

While we are publishing opinions only (sorry we can’t afford liability insurance for investigative journalism at this time) an opinion piece will be more persuasive if grounded in evidence that can be sourced. If seeking only to inflame rather than inform, your style and prose matters more than substance.

We pay $50 ($CAD) per piece. We will consider reprints of pieces posted on personal blogs like Substack, at a rate of $15 ($CAD).

COVER ART

We are seeking cover art submissions for our digital edition ebook (with a publisher’s option to create a print edition). Cover art should be suitable for a SFF genre magazine and should be in a high resolution format suitable for cover creation in Adobe Indesign. The piece will have the publisher’s logo and content headlines superimposed and be subject to adjustment for the publication format. Cover art submissions will also be considered for web banner art and offers may be made to applicable creators.

We pay $300 ($CAD) per cover art piece and will include credit and links to the creator’s portfolio.

MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS

The maximum number of submissions allowed per category will be set on our Moksha submissions page for that category and may change as needed.

SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS

Submissions to T&S can also be made simultaneously to other publications, we just ask for notice in your cover letter that the work is being submitted to other publications and if accepted by another publisher, you notify us by email to editor@tomeandspace.com.

NO AI

AI generated works are not subject to copyright protections and could expose T&S to reputational damage. Creators will need to warrant that their work has not been generated in whole or in-part by AI tools or machine learning.

CONTENT GUIDELINES

We do not have any official content guidelines but we are a new publication seeking a diverse audience and will make editorial decisions to reflect that.

CANADIAN CREATORS

Our submission system will ask whether you are a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident. This is information required to be collected by Canadian granting agencies, which may be applied for by T&S from time to time. But please be advised that T&S is open to creators from any location.
